The Benefits of Decluttering Your Home

With so many of us spending day after day in our homes in these uncertain times, it is crucial that we’re doing everything possible to take care of our mental wellbeing. At Elevate Yoga, we believe in the mental benefits of decluttering your home.

If you have linen cupboards stuffed to capacity, drawers spilling over with items that won’t close, and bookcases packed with books that you’ve yet to read, you aren’t alone. It seems that we all have items in our homes that create clutter. Further, we all tend to say the exact same thing: we’ll get around to sorting it all one day.

Today, Elevate Yoga will be discussing the serious benefits that decluttering your home can have on the mind. Much in the same way that yoga and meditation can benefit both the mind and body, decluttering your home can do much of the same. There has never been a better time than now to look around your home and do a little decluttering.

How Clutter Burdens the Mind

It is a proven fact that clutter can cause a disruption in the flow of your life- both in a physical and mental capacity. There have been various studies completed recently that have drawn a correlation between the presence of clutter and one’s feelings with the satisfaction of their life.

One particular study that shows the connection between clutter and mental wellbeing is one completed by the University of New Mexico. This study set out to examine how the way we closely identify with our home environments can affect our experience in that environment. The study observed adults with mild to moderate cluttering problems and rated their clutter-related behaviors.

As the study concluded, as evidenced by the study’s authors, “Clutter is often an insidious and seemingly harmless outgrowth of people’s natural desire to appropriate their personal spaces with possessions… when [clutter] becomes excessive, it can threaten to physically and psychologically entrap a person in dysfunctional home environments which contribute to personal distress and feelings of displacement and alienation”.

How Decluttering Your Home Can Benefit Your Mind

So how can decluttering your home benefit your state of wellbeing? There are multiple ways that decluttering can put your mind at ease, similarly to the benefits of meditation or yoga. Let’s take a closer look at those benefits.

An Act of Self-Care

One of the biggest benefits of decluttering your home can be found in the creation of a restful living space. Our homes should operate as a sanctuary where we feel the most at peace. When clutter is allowed to take over that environment, it can make us feel stressed. Taking the time to declutter your home is an act of self-care and is something you can feel good about doing for yourself.

Healthier Habits

When our homes are decluttered, it is much easier to go about our daily lives. When all of the items you need are in easy reach it is a much simpler task to go about your daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, and other house chores.

If your home is full of so much clutter that it makes it difficult to navigate and find the things you need easily, this can create unnecessary feelings of stress and a state of discontent with your living situation. Taking the time to declutter can put your mind at ease.

Mental Health Boost

You would likely be surprised how much of a difference the ramifications of less belongings can make. With a less cluttered environment, your mind also becomes decluttered making it easier to think and organize your thoughts.

Similarly to yoga and meditation, decluttering acts as a way of putting your mind in a calmer state. This can have far-reaching benefits for the mind and body that extend to nearly every aspect of your everyday life. Many people report feeling less anxious, more confident, and noticeably more at peace after going about the process of decluttering.
